The region of Jizerské Hory was declared a protected landscape area in 1967. The area occupies 38,000 hectares.
Within the protected area more than 20 protected areas were registered - nature preserves, habitats and research zones. In particular, localities with presence of rare vegetation species are protected, and also large peatbogs and original beech forests.
The general appearance of the Jizerské Hory is noteworthy: it resembles a rather nordic landscape.
