Church of St. Nicholas, Turnov

The Church of St. Nicholas is the oldest church in the historic centre of Turnov.

Originally a Gothic church dating back to the 14th century, its origins are connected with the very foundation of Turnov. After a fire in 1538 it was rebuilt in Renaissance style and in 1722 in Baroque style. The Baroque interior decoration of the church was added to for decades after the reconstruction, and in 1994 the richly decorated interior was restored.

Inside the church you will find valuable Renaissance tombstones of the Wartemberk family, which date back to the 16th century. At that time, the Vartemberk family was the owner of Turnov.

The 25-metre high square tower with thick masonry, which was part of the fortification of the town, is impressive. Nowadays it is one of the landmarks of the town.

Adjacent to the church is a Baroque rectory from 1708, which was built by rebuilding the original school.
